Powered for Life Expands Career Dreams

Mill Village Farms invites guests from a variety of professional backgrounds to our Powered for Life class so that our students can conduct one-on-one information interviews with them. Jill, a long-time Mill Village volunteer and physical therapist, shares her experience from last week:

I interviewed a student who discussed his interest in being a counselor, and he just lit up about the reasons he was considering it. We were able to talk about what that career might entail. He wanted to know how someone would know if a career choice was really the right one.

I interviewed another student who, at first, appeared completely disinterested in talking to me so I started to ask her what her interests are. We subsequently had a great conversation about neurology and why she wanted to study the nervous system; she was passionate about neurology and had extensive knowledge on the topic. It was gratifying to hear her share her passions and see her smile light up.

Understanding the benefits and hardships of different jobs – much less choosing a long-term career – is a difficult undertaking. At Mill Village Farms, we’re committed to exposing youth to unknown options and preparing them with the soft skills necessary for success. Our students are practicing curiosity and taking advantage of the opportunities before them. We’re grateful to keep growing with them and are excited to work with many of them for their first-time job on the farm this summer!

Powered For Life prepares Mill Village Farms students to get and keep their first job. Students use the skills taught over ten weeks to apply for and secure summer or part-time jobs, and to explore college and career plans post-high school.

Help more youth gain invaluable career & life skills!
