Greenville, SC - January 23, 2017 – A community organization focused on job training and revitalizing Greenville’s Westside is receiving support from the nation’s largest home and auto insurer. State Farm® is providing a $25,000 grant to Greenville’s Mill Village Farms. The grant, which is part of the State Farm Neighborhood Assist® program, will be used to provide employment and training opportunities for teenagers. “Mill Village Farms is one of only 40 causes around the nation to be awarded the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant among more than 200 competing causes in 2016,” says State Farm spokesman Roszell Gadson. Organizations around the nation competed through online voting to receive a grant that would be used to improve their communities.
Mill Village Farms provides youth, aged 14-18, with a first-time job experience in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship and basic job skills that enhances their confidence and drive as they transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Mill Village Farms has proven its ability to equip teens with crucial non-cognitive skills (such as verbal and nonverbal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills), which are in high-demand by business owners. These teens are empowered to have their own lives changed, as well empowered to bring about change in the communities they live in. The vision of Mill Village Farms is to build relationships, leverage resources, and empower individuals to transform their communities.
Of the 2,000 cause submissions that were received through State Farm Neighborhood Assist, at least one cause was received from every state in the U.S. Then, the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, a diverse group of 30 students who are passionate about social responsibility, reviewed the cause submissions and selected the 200 finalists to be voted on. In the five years of the program, 200 causes have received a total of $5 million to enact change in their communities.
